Dan Gassert Letter to the Reading Eagle

Albright, Berks lose wonderful service (1/7/11))

Editor:

I read in the Reading Eagle of the passing of Daniel Tannenbaum. I recognize the tireless work and immeasurable contributions to our society made by this man.

Tannenbaum served as the coordinator of the Holocaust Resource Center at Albright College, which is how I met him.

On several occasions we corresponded to discuss Jewish heritage and the Holocaust. Tannenbaum always graciously offered any services or materials that he could provide, and he found the connections to allow educational material on the Holocaust to go to local schools.

Just last year he helped set up a guest speaker for my world cultures classes at Gov. Mifflin High School. The speaker was the daughter of Richard Yashek, a Holocaust survivor who had written a book about his experiences called "The Story of My Life." The presentation to my students certainly enhanced their understanding of the historical events.

Without Tannenbaum, this never would have happened. Even after the presentation, Tannenbaum sent educational material to our school. Albright College and our community have lost a wonderful resource. I am saddened by this passing of knowledge.

He was a man who was instrumental in educating many of our youth and at least one very thankful teacher.
