Technical Services Assistant

DESCRIPTION: The Technical Services department purchases and processes books and audiovisual materials for use by the library patrons.  Technical Services assistants can work between 5 and 20 hours per week during regular business hours and will be trained extensively in their duties.  Specific hours are decided by mutual agreement between the supervisor and the student when hired.
This position reports to the reports to the Acquisitions or the Cataloging Library Assistant.  The duties of the position include but are not necessarily limited to the following:

Acquisitions

  • Check new orders or gifts for duplication
  • Select, print and file correct order document 
  • Add new items to library online acquisitions system
  • Check order prices using web sources
  • Open shipments, check orders, pull order documents, add processing notes and check-in materials

Cataloging

  • Input copy cataloging using national library input standards
  • Understand basic online catalog record
  • Build item records and produce spine labels
  • Add extra copy holding 
  • Edit existing copy records

Processing

  • Prepare materials for circulation by labeling, covering, typing, and adding stickers and plates
  • Perform simple book mending
  • Proof classification information

Special Projects

  • Prepare materials for withdrawal
  • Annotate print and online records for copy and title withdrawals 
  • Check missing materials list
  • Assist in duplicate exchange
  • Other duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS:  The ideal Technical Services Assistant candidate is required to possess all of the following:

  • Orientation to detail
  • Dependability and the ability to be a self-motivated, independent and quick learner
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to lift boxes weighing at least 40 lbs
  • Professional and courteous manner with staff and other student assistants.
  • Capability to work between the hours of 8 AM – 5 PM, Monday through Friday


WAGES: The library currently pays minimum wage $7.25/hour for this position after a students passes their probationary/trainee period. Students advance by demonstrating their mastery of the duties they perform, as enumerated on the skill list for their position and their attitude as evaluated by their supervisors. Formal evaluations occur annually.
