Helpful Hints When Using the Basic Search Box

Important Things to Consider While Constructing Your Search Strategy in cataLION:

  • Enter your keyword(s) in the Search box. (example: attention deficit disorder children).
  • Title is the default search field - to limit your search to specific fields (author, subject, ISBN,series, call number), use the search box drop down menu.  To search the entire record in an ANY keyword mode, select "Library catalog" from the drop down menu.
  • Different forms of a word are searched automatically. Entering the word child will retrieve child, children, children's, child-like, etc.  It will also search for words that start
  • Try to input only the main keywords -- too many words in the search box will retrieve many items with few desired matches while a single keyword may find too many matches.

Changes From the Former OPAC:

  • Items will display in order of a “relevance” ranking, not alphabetically by title.
  • cataLION does not search with Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT). They are presumed in the search.
  • cataLION does not support use of quotations to search for exact phrases.Exact phrases usually appear first on the relevancy display.
