cataLION Search Assistance: Advanced Search Options

Important Information:

• Advanced Search provides a convenient template that allows you to combine search terms with Boolean operators (AND, OR NOT) by entering each word or phrase into a separate box.
• Use search box drop-down menus to select specific search fields, such as author, title, subject, title phrase, etc.
• Many limits are available in Advanced Search:
• Publication Date
• Item Type -- the general category of material such as general collection book, holocaust book, restricted book (archives, special collections, reference, non- circulation items), media, holocaust media, restricted media (for classroom support), juvenile books, curriculum materials, reserve items
• Collections -- the call number headings such as Reference, Folio, Albrightiana
• Shelving Locations -- the physical location in or outside the library
• Language
• By clicking “More options” on the bottom of the screen, you can access more search options:
• Audience
• Format
• Content
• Content Type
• Use the Format option of "webpage" to select online resources.

...Or things of which you should be aware:

• when use any field searching (e.g., ti=hunger games), you will not return truncated word results
• do not have to capitalized proper nouns
• should not use punctuation while searching, the system treats it a blank space
• when using field= for titles, leaving a space after the equal sign lets the first work of the title to be colorized, no space leaves it black.  This does NOT affect the results, just the display
• to search exact phrases in fields, type the field, comma, the letters phr a colon and then surround the words with parentheses - this looks like, ti, phr:"acid rain"
• some searches, like language, are an advanced search limit and work better there
