Circulation Assistant

DESCRIPTION: The Circulation student worker assists the library patrons in using circulation, reserves, photocopiers and printers – key services that the library provides. The Circulation student assistant is an employee of Albright College and represents the library to students, faculty, staff and visitors. The Circulation student assistant can work up to 20 hours per week and will be trained extensively in their duties.  Specific hours are decided by mutual agreement between the supervisor and the student when hired.
The Circulation student worker must provide excellent service to all library patrons in a pleasant positive manner.  This position reports to the Day or Evening Circulation Supervisor.  The duties of the position include but are not necessarily limited to the following:

Building Maintenance

  • Perform opening and closing procedures for the Library
  • Know and follow established notification procedures for emergencies and fire drills
  • Report any physical building problems to appropriate supervisor
  • Know layout and locations of all offices and collections  in the library building and  Science Hall


Circulation

  • Direct patrons to the proper department or reference librarian if appropriate
  • Answer phone courteously and transfer any  calls when necessary
  • Provide appropriate forms for new patrons, e.g., Alumni, Library Society, ACLCP and others
  • Check in/out books, other circulating materials including reserves
  • Operate cash register to receive money for fines, supplies
  • Have a working knowledge of basic library resources (OPAC, Reference areas, online databases, print serials, permanent reserves, microforms, Special Collections)
  • Perform a wide variety of “tasks” like making bulletin boards, creating signs and  finding lost books


Photocopying/printers/PC’s

  • Use copiers and microform machines so as to help patrons with questions and minor problems
  • Change toner in copiers and printers
  • Clear laser printer and copier paper jams and fix minor problems
  • Report computer and copier malfunctions


Reserves

  • Label items for reserves
  • Reserve and check in/out limited AV accessories
  • Reserve and check in/out Study Room B


Stack Maintenance

  • Shelve and shift books
  • Shelf read
  • Face shelves


QUALIFICATIONS:  The ideal Circulation candidate is required to possess all of the following:

  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to adhere to a work schedule 
  • Dependability and the ability to be a self-motivated, independent and quick learner
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to lift boxes weighing at least 40 lbs.
  • Professional and courteous manner with staff and other student assistants
  • Capability to work night and weekend hours


WAGES: The library currently pays minimum wage $7.25/hour for this position after a students passes their probationary/trainee period where they are paid $6.55/hr. Students advance by demonstrating their mastery of the duties they perform, as enumerated on the skill list for their position and their attitude as evaluated by their supervisors. Formal evaluations occur annually.
