Information Literacy

A resource guide for faculty who wish to incorporate information literacy skills into their classes. Modules can be sequenced or used individually.

Using Information Ethically is designed for students to think of scholarship as an ongoing conversation and that citing the work of others is a means of participating in the conversation. It is 20-30 minutes long.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand their contribution to the scholarly conversation around a topic and that ethical behavior involves giving credit to those whose works or ideas they have used
  • Be aware of different citation formats
  • Identify the elements of a citation in a book and a journal article

Librarian in Class

  • Explains the difference between quoting and paraphrasing (this may have been covered earlier by the instructor or after a visit to the Writing Center)
  • Explains how to read and understand citations in articles and books

Assessment

  • Students create a citation for a given article

Activities (optional)

  • Students read two short passages and determine whether credit needs to be given
