Information Literacy

A resource guide for faculty who wish to incorporate information literacy skills into their classes. Modules can be sequenced or used individually.

Getting Started with Research is an introductory, foundational session. It is highly recommended for FYS classes and for classes where an instructor feels that students lack basic information literacy skills. It is 30-45 minutes long, depending on whether the optional Activities are used.

Learning Objectives

  • Know where the physical library is on campus
  • Know how to get to the library website and to databases
  • Information sources exist in different ways and formats
  • Understand the value of defining multiple terms
  • Create keywords for a topic

Librarian in Class

  • Introduces the library website and its components
  • Discusses types of sources (primarily databases for articles and catalogs)
  • Demonstrates a sample topic and search strategy using Academic Search Complete

Assessment

  • Students are able to develop an effective search strategy for a chosen topic

 

 

 

Activities (optional)

  • Students work in pairs to develop keywords on a topic (5 minutes)
  • Students use the search-strategy worksheet to outline a research strategy with their partner (10 minutes)
