Gingrich Library: Your Success Is Why We're Here!

Information Literacy

A resource guide for faculty who wish to incorporate information literacy skills into their classes. Modules can be sequenced or used individually.

When Your Syllabus Time is Limited

Librarians are also available to offer a single session on using library resources and critical thinking. The format is closer to a lecture, and there are fewer opportunities for student participation and active learning. The general structure is:

An introduction to college research

  • An overview of library databases, with an emphasis on a general database (usually Academic Search Complete) and a specialized one such as PsycInfo

Effective searching

  • Examples of using filters or other limits for more effective searching
  • Creating a search strategy using key words and phrases

Evaluating sources

  • The focus is on non-library databases
  • Understanding bias and relevance

Giving credit

  • Using information ethically and an overview of citation resources (or a specific one determined by the instructor)
