Information Literacy

A resource guide for faculty who wish to incorporate information literacy skills into their classes. Modules can be sequenced or used individually.

Finding Sources using Databases and Catalogs is useful for FYS as well as for classes where an instructor feels that students lack basic information literacy skills. It is 30-45 minutes long depending on whether the optional Activities are used

Learning Objectives

  • Understand where and how to locate journals on their topic
  • Understand where and how to locate books on their topic

Librarian in Class

  • Discusses and demonstrates general and/or specialized databases
  • Demonstrates how and when to use catalogs to find books

Assessment

  • Students can locate a new article or book on their topic

Activities (optional)

  • Students use a worksheet to formulate a search strategy around their topic
  • Students use at least one database to find 2-3 relevant sources on their topic
